India–EU FTA Signing Expected by December 2026: How European Importers Can Prepare

Category: Market Intelligence  |  Read time: ~5 minutes

The India EU FTA is close to the finish line. Speaking in Berlin on 22 October 2026, India's Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal said the agreement, announced on 27 January, will be signed before the end of the calendar year and should become operational in the first quarter of 2027.

For buyers in Germany, the Netherlands, France, Italy or Spain, that leaves only a few months to get ready. This guide explains where the India EU free trade agreement stands, what is still uncertain, and how European importers can prepare to source from India so they benefit from day one.

What's in this guide:

Where the India EU FTA Stands in October 2026

According to Business Standard and The Tribune, the negotiations were announced as concluded on 27 January 2026. Both sides are now working towards a signing before the end of 2026.

What Is Still Uncertain About the India EU FTA

The dates are a target, not a guarantee. After signing, the agreement still needs parliamentary ratification and other approvals. Goyal's own timelines also vary slightly: some reports quote the first quarter of 2027, others four to five months after signing.

In addition, the EU's carbon border tax (CBAM) was one of the longest-running sticking points in the talks, and Goyal warned that European regulations could still affect trade. Therefore, importers should plan for the FTA but keep current supply contracts in place until the start date is confirmed.

Why European Importers Should Prepare for the India EU FTA Now

Goyal's advice to businesses was clear: do not wait. Start identifying customers and partners, exchange product samples and quality requirements, and discuss pricing now, so trade can grow as soon as the agreement applies.

For European buyers, the same logic applies in reverse. Suppliers in India are already preparing for higher demand from Europe, and the best producers will fill their capacity with buyers who started early.

  • Duty savings: lower or zero duties on many Indian goods once the agreement applies.
  • Diversification: a second sourcing base alongside China and Southeast Asia.
  • Stable rules: a framework for rules of origin and customs cooperation that supports long-term contracts.

Five Steps to Prepare Your Sourcing from India

India EU FTA – European importer checking product samples from India

You can do most of the preparation before the India EU FTA is signed.

  1. List the products you buy today and their HS codes, and ask your customs broker which ones pay duty into the EU.
  2. Shortlist Indian suppliers and request samples and written specifications now.
  3. Check EU rules that apply regardless of the FTA – for example food safety limits, packaging rules under the PPWR and CBAM for covered goods.
  4. Ask suppliers whether they can provide the proof of origin the agreement will require.
  5. Agree the Incoterm, such as FOB or CIF, so you can compare landed costs before and after the FTA.

Products for Importing from India to Europe

European importers already buy a wide range of goods from India, and the India EU FTA is likely to widen it. Typical categories for importing from India to Europe include food and takeaway packaging, paper and cotton bags, home textiles, spices and dehydrated food ingredients.

Before you switch suppliers, test samples in your own market, confirm compliance with EU rules in writing and plan a first order that lets you check quality, documents and delivery times.
